Dining Out: Chinese Food

Mmmm Chinese food... We probably order Chinese once a week, but usually something about it doesn't agree with me. I'm not just gluten free, but have a ton of other food intolerances. I can't read the ingredients of every item on the menu so I go with what I think is safe and hope for the best. Chinese food is great though because it is for the most part, dairy free and they mainly use cornstarch to thicken sauces and soups instead of wheat flour. I've learned to ask for dishes steamed (instead of battered and fried) with the same sauce it usually comes with. Before I knew I was allergic to gluten, my favorite Chinese dish was pork fried dumplings, I really miss eating those, but I make due now. Just make sure to ask if they use the soy sauce WITHOUT wheat. Most places do, but it always good to make sure. Also, the little soy sauce packets that come with the food are usually gluten free, but of course always check ingredients. PF Chang's, a corporate Chinese restaurant has a complete gluten free menu and knowledgeable wait staff that can help choose the appropriate dish. Additionally, they have come out with an at home line of dishes available at your local supermarket. See more information here http://www.pfchangshomemenu.com/frozen-dinners

  1. The problem isn't usually the ingredients, but the cross contamination. If anything is deep-fried, it is usually in the same fryer as all other items. Most small places do not have a separate GF fryer. Most places do not wash the wok in between meals. It is wiped out and usually re-oiled. That too can be a cross-contamination problem.
